edit: I do realize that there’s a difference between “abstinence-only education doesn’t work,” as compared to the above but the gentleman I overheard on my commute last Friday didn’t seem to know.

I remember hearing this in my introduction to Philosophy class. It was one of those discussions where the majority of the class scoff at the thought of God and revel in self-satisfaction. If you wanted to inquire about the omnipotence of God without the veil of a self-contradictory statement you would ask, “Is God powerful enough to make Himself not-powerful?” Yes.

But the followup question becomes: Why would He? Love. Jesus’ death is the ultimate act of love.

If it were me in my pride and resentment towards those who don’t understand me, could I have let myself suffer as He did? As Fr. Mike Schmitz puts it, “LIGHTNING-BOLT-CITY.” As we continue this Holy Week, let us pray that this Lenten season humbles us and reminds us of God’s Power and Love.

China’s one-child policy has faced criticism from around the world. In addition to more obvious concerns about civil liberties, the policy has reportedly had the unintended effect of many families aborting female babies until a male child is conceived. That trend has resulted in 118 boys being born for every 100 girls, which has contributed to males outnumbering females in China by an estimated 30 to 40 million.

Follow Up of the Day: A day after Virginia lawmakers were compelled to pass a non-invasive version of the state’s controversial ultrasound bill, the full Virginia Senate voted this afternoon to table the equally contentious “personhood” bill, which would have defined life as beginning at conception.

A motion by Senators Thomas Norment (R-James City County) and Richard Saslaw (D-Fairfax County) to send the legislation back to committee passed by a measure of 24 to 14, meaning the bill can no longer be voted on this year.

Modeled after a Missouri law, the personhood bill would have conferred certain legal protections on fetuses, making the vast majority of abortions illegal after conception.

Despite amendments to protect contraception and in-vitro fertilization, Sen. Norment said he recognized that “there are more legal complexities to this issue than I was aware of.”

Obviously, zygotes, fetuses, unborn can’t vote! Guess what, children can’t either! But they all deserve the right to life.
